Aluminium Assisted Nickel Alloying in Submerged Arc Welding of Carbon Steel: Application of Unconstrained Metal Powders

Nickel alloying of carbon steel is used to enhance strength and toughness. the weld metal via solid wire presents several difficulties as highlighted previously, such work hardening in manufacturing feeding through SAW mechanism, expensive time consuming multiple formulations. The application nickel aluminium powders unconstrained format, meaning not fluxed cored or wire, simplify alloying. Al powder control oxygen potential at pool-molten flux interface. results presented here show that addition enhances Ni yield metal, 85%, compared pre-alloyed yields 57–78% applied previous work. Carbon was alloyed 6.9% 3.7% Al. Thermodynamic analysis elucidate chemical interaction between Al, its effects on pool. Overall process productivity gains stem from because step eliminated.
